The Burnout Doctor: Your 6-step recovery plan

Dr Claire Ashley is a leading authority on burnout and wellbeing, widely recognised as The Burnout Doctor. With a background in neuroscience and over fifteen years of clinical experience, she has dedicated her career to helping overwhelmed professionals and organisations identify, prevent and recover from burnout. Her compassionate and evidence-based approach has made her a sought-after speaker, educator and advocate for workplace mental health.

Claire qualified as a doctor in 2008 after graduating with first-class honours in Neuroscience and later a medical degree with honours from the University of Bristol. Early in her medical career, she pursued a highly competitive training programme in intensive care and anaesthetics, but after experiencing burnout, anxiety and depression herself, she transitioned to general practice. This personal journey profoundly shaped her mission to support others facing similar challenges, combining her scientific understanding of the brain with real-world insight into professional pressure and wellbeing.

Over the past decade, Claire has become a recognised voice in the field of mental health and professional resilience. She has served as a GP within the NHS since 2008, completed her MRCGP in 2018 and gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health with distinction in 2020. Her varied roles include Health Inequalities Fellow at BNSSG Training Hub, Clinical Strategy Consultant, Effective Consulting Tutor at the University of Bristol and Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Bobby Chat. In 2024, she was appointed UK Workplace Mental Health Expert at Headspace and continues to serve as an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur.

Claire’s influence extends beyond clinical practice. She hosts the Beat Burnout podcast and authored ‘The Burnout Doctor’, which won Gold at the Bloomsbury Publishing UK Health and Wellbeing Awards. She has appeared on BBC Breakfast to discuss the realities of burnout among healthcare professionals and is an Ambassador for Doctors in Distress. Dr Claire Ashley is invited to speak because she combines professional expertise, lived experience and deep empathy, offering powerful, practical insights into how individuals and organisations can thrive in the face of modern-day pressures.
