Dave Walsh is a renowned British strongman and mental health advocate. Widely recognised for his achievements in the world of disabled strength sports, he is also a passionate speaker who uses his personal experiences to inspire others. As a mental health speaker, he focuses on overcoming adversity, resilience, and the power of perseverance, drawing from his own journey to help others navigate their challenges. His motivational talks leave a lasting impact, encouraging individuals to push beyond their limitations, both physically and mentally.
Dave’s career began in a different field altogether, joining the British Army at the age of 16. He served for eight years, including a tour in Iraq, before transitioning into civilian life. However, he struggled with the shift and found it difficult to adjust. His passion for strength training led him to the world of strongman competitions, where he competed as an able-bodied athlete. In 2014, Dave was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition that would change the course of his life. Despite the diagnosis, he refused to give up on his athletic ambitions and instead pivoted to wheelchair-based strongman events, setting the stage for his incredible future achievements.
In recent years, Dave has become a force in disabled strength sports. He won World’s Strongest Disabled Man titles in 2022 and 2023 at the World Strength Games in Florida. In 2023, he set a Guinness World Record for the heaviest wheelchair vehicle pull, moving two 10-tonne lorries. He also made history as the first seated person to deadlift 960 lbs, later increasing the weight to over 1,100 lbs. These accomplishments have earned him recognition as one of the most remarkable athletes in his field, and they also make his story all the more inspiring when speaking about mental health and resilience.
Dave’s journey is one of immense strength, both physical and mental. His story has resonated with countless people, and he continues to be a highly sought-after speaker. He is hired by organisations and groups who want to motivate their teams, raise awareness about mental health issues, and highlight the importance of pushing through life’s challenges. His personal experiences, combined with his remarkable achievements, make him a compelling figure in the realm of motivational speaking.
“We had the pleasure of having Dave come to speak with our colleagues at AMS for International Day of People with Disabilities in December and I could not recommend Dave enough. Whilst being his funny and genuine self, Dave was open and honest about his struggles inc his time in the Army and coming out of that, to being diagnosed with MS and his relationship now with his family (not to mention his achievements in sport and strongman). Coming out of the call, I felt so motivated to not only do better in supporting my disabled colleagues as an ally but doing more for my community and bringing people together (to talk if nothing else). Whilst I don’t like to label people inspirational, Dave certainly gave me and others inspiration to do more and do better, Thank you Dave and I hope we can work together again in 2025!”
“Dave delivered the most heart-warming and inspiring session to our Disability Employee Network and Veterans’ Network. The session was packed out and we received wonderful feedback from our delegates: “Super inspirational”; “Totally absorbing”; “What an incredible journey”; “So helpful”. We particularly appreciated Dave’s warmth and candour about his highs and lows, and he shared many insights we could take away and apply to our own lives from managing mental health challenges, navigating the working environment through various shocks, dealing with illness and connecting with others. Thank you, Dave, I can genuinely say I won’t ever forget this event and how it made us feel as a group.”
